what is embodied + functional therapy?

In the book, Mastery of Love, don Miguel Ruiz describes our relationship with our bodies, the impact of that relationship on our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being; and the ripple effect it has on how we relate to the world. He writes:

If you look at your body, you will find billions of living beings who depend on you. Every cell in your body is a living being that depends on you. You are responsible for all those beings. You can provide what they need; you can love all those beings, or you can be so mean to them. The cells in your body are completely loyal to you; they work for you in harmony. We can even say they pray to you. You are their God. The relationship between you and your body, between you and all those living cells that depend on you, can become the most beautiful relationship. Everyday, you can offer devotional love to your own body, a puja — [you can] treat your body with honor, with gratitude, with respect.

At the Body School, I want to help YOU become aware of the duality of your experience through embodied practices; to [re]connect you to your body's wisdom, innate intelligence, and drive for balance or home[ostasis]. Together, we will begin to create a relationship with your body that is integrated and intuitive.

  • EMBODIMENT + AWARENESS

To address the mind-body connection, we use the tools of breath + movement to create regular and meaningful somatic experiences, repeatedly bringing your awareness inward, back to the body; understanding our bodies as an extension of ourselves and experiences helps to reintegrate this relationship .

  • RESTORE MOBILITY + ALIGNMENT

To address joint and soft tissue dysfunctions we use specific Functional Manual Therapy techniques (in-person), including internal work for pelvic floor dysfunctions, somatic + biomechanically based exercises, and safe + guided self-mobilization techniques.

  • RESTORE CONNECTION + COORDINATION

To address neuromuscular dysfunctions we use specific hands-on techniques (in-person), including manually resisted exercises (in-person), innovative proprioceptive + stability exercises, guided visualization, and anatomic +/or functional cueing techniques for kinesthetic awareness.

  • RESTORE MOTION + CONTROL

To address motor control dysfunctions we use activity-specific exercises based on biomechanics + movement analysis, imagery, and anatomic + functional cueing techniques to drive efficient strategies.
